London 2012: Carol Rodriguez returns to the Olympics
Carol Rodriguez is making her second return to the Olympics after a daunting season. Last year her season ended early with an injury and that carried over into her 2012 season. After running all season and not hitting her Olympic mark her moral began to get the best of her. Her persistence overshadowed any adversities she faced off the track.
Carol booked a major commercial but had to pass since she hadn’t reached her mark. In Jamaica she was hoping to come home with the Olympic mark but she was short barely by a second. After landing back in the US she received a call that she had one more chance and she would have to leave the following day to travel to Canada. At this point she was exhausted from traveling extensively.
The last day to obtain the Olympic mark was July 8, 2012 and Canada was her last chance to claim her spot in London. She checked the weather to see the a cold temperature and possible precipitation created a gloomy feelings. She called everyone close to her to see if she should make one more attempt. After that she sat in her bed with a perplexed look and knew if she didn’t go it would be a what if always in the back of her mind.
Carol boarded the plane July 4th and ran July 5th to a victorious meet while obtaining her Olympic mark. She left Canada with a weight lifted off her shoulders and the urge to train harder for the Olympics right away. The what if was answered at the very moment if she didn’t board the plane her Olympics dreams would have come to an abrupt end.
Carol Rodriguez is an epitome of an athlete that gives her all to the very end.
