Musically Opinionated: Teyonna’s Top Ten – 4/8/2022

I don’t know about you, but I NEEDED good new music in my life this week– bit of a struggle because a lot of these didn’t drop until the end of the week and there were a lot of album drops Thursday night/ Friday morning, so I didn’t have a ton of time to listen to it all, but we made it work. Let’s jump into it, my Top 10 songs:

Overthinking ft. H.E.R. – Coi Leray (April 8, 2022)

I’m a sucker for a melody like this. Guitar softly plucking a simple refrain, subtle bass, synthetic high hat ticking to give it edge, and to top it all off, melodic bars talking sh*t.  SIGN ME UP EVERYTIME! I won’t lie, H.E.R. is what drew me in, but I am a big fan of what Coi Leray is doing on this song. I’ll have to check out the rest of this new album, so don’t quote me, but this song? 10/10 would recommend.

Real Recognize Real – Marzz (April 7, 2022)

MY FAVE DROPPED HER ALBUM and I can’t even find an uninterrupted 37 minutes and 34 seconds to take it in, in all its glory. I like to listen to a new album start to finish for artists I love, but for the sake of keeping this list somewhat diverse, I just previewed the songs I hadn’t heard and this one stuck out immediately, wow. With the artwork too, I just feel UPLIFTED.

Out Loud ft. Kehlani – Syd (April 8, 2022)

AND WE GOT NEW SYD THIS WEEK! Blessings. I wasn’t following the drop of this album and I’m ashamed?! But as soon as I saw this song title with the Kehlani feature I knew I’d love it. I was right. How does Kehlani never miss on features? How does Syd never miss on the vibes?

Right On – Lil Baby (April 8, 2022)

I won’t lie, I don’t keep my ear to the ground for rap and good rappers, but I’ve seen Lil Baby live a few times and I’m a fan. Sonically he gives me just enough to key into while I’m listening, but not too much that I’m zoning out (Sorry, I tend to do that a lot when I listen to rap these days.) His flow is soothing to me, too. I can’t be the only one.

All 4 Nothing (I’m So In Love) – Lauv (April 8, 2022)

This is my favorite Forever 21 bop for the rest of spring. If I close my eyes I can see the store layout: Color coordinated, everything in the nude palette on one side of the store, all the green dresses on the other side of the floor, blazers in every color you can think of, and mannequins in the front wearing the perfect layered look but you can’t figure out where the jacket is hanging— Oh! Found it, and…of course they don’t have my size. At least the song playing is a bop.

Crazy What Love Can Do – David Guetta, Becky Hill, Ella Henderson (April 8, 2022)

I have my EDM moments too, y’all. And this one is serving everything I used to love about Cascada. This helped me pump out my Friday workout and it’s going to be my new lady jam (Yes that’s a reference to Pitch Perfect– fitting, right? I thought so.)

Bonjour ft. Summer Walker – NO1-NOAH (April 8, 2022)

I know, I know, I’m so predictable. This song has my name written all over it. Autotuned sing-rapping on a lite trap beat. Toxic R&B has me in a chokehold, but it’s such a VIBE, y’all. And no one does it better than Summer Walker. She sounds so good on this.

Bring It Back – Julian King (April 8, 2022)

Julian King is one of my new favorite voices. This song has a haunting, moody sound, it reminds me of my favorite angsty Weeknd songs, but then his voice comes creeping over the beat and it’s so smooth. He had me at the hook, then the top box kicked in at the end. Love it.

Unpredictable ft. Kiana Ledé – Destin Conrad (April 5, 2022)

I love how simple this song is. It feels like a warm bath during golden hour. Kiana Ledé is my woman crush everyday and she always sounds so sensual and soothing, and this feature with Destin Conrad fits right into her repertoire.

psychofreak ft. WILLOW – Camila Cabello (April 8, 2022)

Okay, hear me out, because I do NOT recommend Camila lightly, and I know y’all are tempted to throw the tomatoes at me for this one, but WILLOW sets the whole vibe. And if I try hard enough, I can almost forget it’s Camila singing. The song is catchy, what do you want from me?
