Musically Opinionated: Teyonna’s Top Ten – 4/15/2022

If you don’t know this about me yet, then you gon’ learn today that I am a Mariah Carey stan— or as we call it, a lamb. So THE music moment of this week for me was Mariah Carey’s Masterclass clips with Brandy re-imagining “The Roof”, one of my favorite songs of all time. We’re talking top 3. That moment between them has not been released as a single (yet), so while I wait on that, I did check out actual singles that dropped. Get into it, my top 10 for this week:

About Damn Time – Lizzo (April 14, 2022)

Lizzo is always good for establishing a good time, and this song is no exception. The disco beat makes this the perfect summer time jam, and fits my sunny mood heading into the weekend. I’ll be lifting in the gym to this, cleaning to this, hell, I’ll be getting ready to go out to this too.

Lifetime – Dylan Sinclair (April 13, 2022)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again as long as it’s true: Dylan Sinclair just never disappoints me. I can’t get enough of his voice. It’s so silky and soft and sexy. I get very excited about male vocalists and he gives me everything I’ve been missing about male R&B but also doesn’t really feel like he’s trying, which intrigues me. It makes him mysterious, like he’s playing hard to get. Such a tease. I’m into it.

Free – Otis Kane (April 15, 2022)

Am I the only one who pictures my fantasy life as cinematic movie frames in my head, with also my entire soundtrack and score picked out? Well just so you know, this song is playing in the background of the scene where I’m driving down a scenic coastal highway in a classic convertible, top down. Bonus points for that crackle reel aesthetic too, like it was filmed on an old camera. I can seriously smell the salty ocean air and feel the wind through my hair.

Another – Muni Long (April 12, 2022)

I genuinely like listening to Muni Long and I’m glad she gave us something else because y’all have strangled the life out of Hours and Hours. This song is cute and sassy and all of us ladies can absolutely relate— what one n*gga won’t do, another will! “Putting you on notice, another man bought me roses”, I mean, bars. Make sure you let them know, thanks for the reminder sis.

Losing You – OCHÉ (April 6, 2022)

It just wouldn’t be me if I didn’t find a moody male crooner for this list every week. This is a very on-trend song – melancholy and short, with a nice juxtaposition of smooth tones in the melody together with a grounded rap/ talking section. It feels honest without being too obvious. Very artsy, which sometimes will make me roll my eyes, but I like it here in this song.

Get High, Get By ft. D Smoke – Kenyon Dixon (April 8, 2022)

I love me some D Smoke! I’m new to the Kenyon Dixon wave but I’m a fan after hearing this song. We live in the era of ~vibes~ absolutely, and this song embodies that really well. I’m not repotting any of my plants this week but if I was, this would certainly be the first song in the rotation for that. In the meantime, I’ll have this one on deck for 4/20 festivities.

Treat Me – Chlöe (April 8, 2022)

I was late on this wave last week but I made sure to get right this week. No surprise that this generation’s It girl delivered once again. Her talent comes through in every song, from all the production layers to the ad libs to the harmonies you can hear throughout the chorus— I always love breaking down her songs.  She’s been serving look after look after look as well, I mean, this cover art? INSANE.

ALL FOR NOTHING – HENNESSY (April 5, 2022)

Two words: guitar solo. This is a cute song and I like it but the GUITAR. I’m not even gonna lie to you, I’m coming back to listen specifically to this guitar line over and over again. No shade to Hennessy but this guitar solo ate her up. It reminds me of the guitar line on U Got It Bad.

Face the River – Gavin DeGraw (April 13, 2022)

I always have to keep y’all guessing what I’m about to throw on the list. And LINDA HONEY LISTEN, I try to peek into what they got going on over in country land every once in a while, and I genuinely like this. Simple, stripped, and Gavin has a great voice, no doubt about it. Your soul needs a break from all the bops and ass-shaking music, believe me. Take a break with this one.

Sex In Public – Menna (April 8, 2022)

I had to go LOOKING for music this Friday y’all. My usual go-to genres were quiet this week so I found myself dipping into sounds I don’t typically seek out on my own. This song was on an independent label release list and I’m really into it. It reminds me of the upbeat quirky pop/punk sound we got from Paramore’s After Laughter album in 2017. The lyrics are fun and the song doesn’t take itself too seriously. I could hear this playing in a Kith store and I’m not mad at it.
