How is it the end of May already? Sheeeeeesh. 2022 is flying by. With all of the tragedy in the news, this week was yet another moody and emotional week for me, even the official start of #GeminiSeason couldn’t keep a smile on my face, but I can say that music has been helping me push through my feelings. I hope y’all like the picks for this week:
Ya girl is clearly slipping because how did I miss this ‘remixes’ EP? I feel like I heard the original version of this song a while back and it didn’t spark anything for me then, but this one definitely caught my ears this time around. Maybe it’s the Leon Thomas feature? Anyway you slice it, I really like this one.
I was slow to listen to this new Sage Harris EP, but I’m getting right finally. Moody boy vibes are immaculate, as expected. I won’t lie, the lyrics float in this space that’s lighter on my heart than say, a Bryson Tiller joint, and in the midst of the heavy stuff that took place this past week, it can feel a bit superficial. This song had enough of a beat to help me power through menial tasks during the day.
Of the list of songs I had on my list to listen to this week, this was the most unexpected, the most obscure, and the most surprising because I happened to like it more than most of the songs I listened to this week. Maybe it’s the funky bass line and the synth that helped ground me, but this reminded me of the first time I listened to Phony Ppl, and now I’m back to wishing I could roller skate because this is such a smooth roller rink vibe.
Do y’all know Casper Sage? If your answer is yes, I’m mad at you for not putting me on. I don’t have too much more to say because I clearly need to do my homework and research and I’m excited to do that if I can get more of this sound.
Fair warning, if you’re jumpy or naturally paranoid like me, this song may freak you out. It made me jump a little bit because I was listening to it in the dead of night while working and the switch ups were startling, but I just don’t listen to too much Screamo anymore and wasn’t expecting it. This song, however, really describes how I’ve been feeling lately, especially each time I get asked “How are you?”
Ooooh. She’s giving Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 and Calvin knows that. I like Dua Lipa and just never find myself listening to her too often but as soon as the beat kicked in here, I knew she’d be in her bag on this song. Young Thug is a great companion on this one too.
I came for Tiana Major9, one of my favorite singers out right now. I got to see her open for Jazmine Sullivan this year and wow. She actually sounds this lovely even in person. I wish there was more of her but my OG moody boy Bryson holds this one down too. I think I actually like the dance version with David Guetta better for Bryson but I’m sharing this one in solidarity with my name twin.
This week’s F21 bop is everything I love to hate about pop today– complete with a popular rapper on a verse, a sample of a classic oldie, a cookie-cutter beat, and irreverent lyrics. And with all of these things combined, with the right sprinkle of a secret ingredient I can’t quite pin down, it becomes a song I’m slightly ashamed to say I keep listening to.
I’m pretty late to this one, but it’s just now floating into my orbit, and I just like it. It’s giving 3LW and what I imagine Little Mix kind of sounds like (honestly, I never really listened to them but for some reason it just sounds right.) I don’t care much for the girl group vibe right now but this is cute and the “Irreplaceable”-esque lyrics are catchy.
This is unapologetically one of my favorite white girl jams, and Natasha Bedingfield just sounds so clean here. Clear, powerful vocals with these really crisp and raw moments– my girl has been known to oversing just a smidge but not here. Thanks for this, Natasha.
